In this article I discuss my finding and share some thoughts on how to enter the Digital Art Market, this is not just for artists or content creators, this is also for investors and collectors, if you love collecting pop toys or pokemon cards this is for you too. you just follow the same steps but buy/trade Art instead.

This is also my first ever blog post, so be gentle, I don’t often speak, nevermind write. I have recently wanted to explore being more creative in the digital world to see if I could make a bit of money from my skills and then I found out about crypto art, to think I’ve just studied for a master in creative arts practice too and not once was this mentioned? haha

I recently stumbled upon the world of crypto art, it was a youtube video that showcased the sale of Beeple’s artwork at a staggering $3.5m that piqued my interest. yup $3.5m within five minutes of auction, sound crazy right? after a good while of looking into the details I was truly blown away, why am I only finding out about this now? is this real?(yes) How do I get involved?

I feel you will agree that not long ago the prospects for a digital artist were bleak, with piracy destroying the value of digital work before it is even conceived, I even gave up for a time as I felt there was no real career prospects in drawing pictures, only extra money, but turns out at that this new way of selling finally gives value to your digital artwork by the use of NFT (non-fungible tokens) and is starting to make some serious traction.

So how do you get started?

  1. Make some cool Art, like really cool, a lot of work already out there uses blockchain and bitcoin as subjects, you might be really good but your work is still subject to a galleries interest, that is most well known galleries such as KnownOrigin and SuperRare carefully select the exhibiting artists. I imagine, as with most things, it can be more about who you know, not what you know but don’t let that put you off, there are many galleries out there and many more to come, furthermore there is ways of cutting out middlemen, check out this article, I found it very interesting and helpful.
  2. Get a wallet for your crypto currency, metamask.io is really hot right now, it comes with a extension for your browser to connect your wallet to apps. Do take care when signing up for this as you will receive a private key for your wallet and if you lose it, its gone forever.
  3. Keep a log of your journey creating your works, share with the world your thoughts along the way, for me the backstory of any art is half the art; to know what has driven the creation of a thing helps understand its purpose, it’s meaning even it’s worth. You could use Medium.com like me or facebook, twitter, instagram, wherever works for you, going back over your logs might just inspire you in later years too.
  4. Keep at it, don’t give up, don’t expect to make a million off your first sale and don’t just do it for money, do it for the love of art and creativity.

So why bother?

1. People love to collect things and pay good money for it right? so this is an opportunity to make a passion a career, lotta people in the world, wanting to say they have something unique???

2. In these early stages your work is more likely to be notice and will become part of a new chapter in the history of art.

3. This opens the field of Digital Art wider than ever before, in which one can create new experiences for the world to enjoy. you might find yourself coming up with ideas you never thought you would, for example you can do more with coded art work than you can with a digital image, you could use processing or p5.js to make an interactive piece.

4. As we have seen with most crypto currencies, the value appreciates over time and in this situation, because the art is part of the blockchain, it too see the benefits of appreciation over time, obviously the bubble could burst and your work be worthless… but I have a good feeling about this.

5. Lastly, selling your work in this manner not only gives you a bigger market and greater creative opportunities, it also affords the chance to receive royalties where due.

Conclusion

Personally I have never really had much confidence in making money from my own work or music or digital content of any kind as I never feel happy with it but is that not sometimes the curse of creation? It might just some of us haha but now more than ever I feel like I might actually be able to do something, at least make a bit extra cash and potentially more and I think you can too, probably more so… all you have to do is let your hard work and all those hours you’ve spent start to make you some money, get MetaMask, get some art up there online and start collecting, help the market grow, get involved with the communities and watch your work accumulate value.

So if your big in to creating digital content, it seems like now would be a good time to have a look at crypto art for yourself and see if it is something you feel you could pursue, even if you just do it for a passion, go for it, just remember to blog everything you do, people want to her the full story and don’t ever lose you private keys. Give me a follow to see what I start to churn out in the coming months, I’ve been very shy for too long, you might just like something I do and if you don't, you’ll still learn something. drop me a message or leave a comment if you have any questions or anything.
